Calling all beginner skiers and snowboarders! On Friday, January 8, 2016 at 10am, something special is happening. Something that has never been done! Boyne Mountain SnowSports Academy is joining with ski resorts across the country to set the World Record for the LARGEST multi-venue Ski and the LARGEST multi-venue Snowboard Lessons ever taught. – and we are going to have FUN doing it.

It’s for the Guinness Book of World Records. Ski and snowboard areas in the U.S. will host at 10am, a beginner lesson for either ski or snowboard as part of this event. Save the date and spread the word. If you already ski or snowboard then tell your beginner friends and family members.

Ski or Snowboard Lesson

  • $35 for BOYNE Learn to Downhill Ski or Snowboard
  • 10am – noon
  • The program is open to everyone 7 years and older
  • All-day equipment rental is included
  • A 90 minute novice lesson is included that will explain equipment usage and covers basic gliding/sliding, turning and stopping skills
  • Beginner area lift ticket to hone your skills included

Offered every Friday and Saturday evening through March 10.

In true Boyne Mountain fashion, we have taken an ordinary dinner and made it, well, more fun! Whether you are dining with family, catching up with couples, or escaping the real world, we think that indulgence is more savory when earned and shared.

The evening will begin at 6pm on our most historic chairlift, Hemlock. Cozy up with a special someone on the double chair and take in the views of the Boyne Valley before reaching the summit. Warm up inside the Eagle’s Nest with some spiced wine and hot cocoa as your Snowshoe Guide helps you gear up with snowshoes. The guided snowshoe hike departs the Eagle’s Nest at 6:30pm. Digest the beauty of twilight like never before while meandering through snow-covered trees and trails on foot. Gathering with the group at the halfway point bonfire, complete with hot toddies and warm cocoa, is sure to leave a lasting impression. Stomp the rest of the way down Cold Springs before arriving at your dinner destination, Stein Eriksen’s. Snowshoers will sit down to a three-course meal paired with live entertainment to complete the this fun dining adventure.

The Menu: Fondue Experience

  • First Course: Mixed Greens, Grape Tomatoes, Shaved Red Onion Champagne Vinaigrette
  • Second Course: Cheese Fondue- Appenzeller, Emmental, Gruyere, Reisling, Crusty Ciabatta
  • Third Course: Dark Chocolate Ganache, Pound Cake, Rice Krispie, Cookie Dough

Cost is $59 per person, not including tax and gratuity. Includes chairlift ride, hot beverage at Eagle’s Nest, snowshoe rental, hot beverage at bonfire, and three-course dinner at Stein Eriksen’s.

Boyne City Winterfest features activities the whole family can enjoy. Just some of the events include ice sculpture, indoor sidwalk sales, chili cook-off, wine tasting and horse-drawn sleigh rides.

All dayINDOOR SIDEWALK SALES at many downtown merchants. Details.

All daySNOW SCULPTURE CONTEST – Sunset Park, west end of Water Street. Call 231-582-6222 to register.

All day – Great sledding, ice skating and cross-country skiing at Avalanche Preserve Recreation Area, end of Wilson Street. Warming house has restrooms and free loaner skates and sleds.

9 a.m. to 1 p.m.Boyne City Farmers Market features Winterfest Frozen Features – Market Chili to taste and take home, along with other produce, meats and baked goods. In the Red Barn next to the Boyne District Library on S. Park Street.

 

11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. – David Wyant of Harbor Springs, author of “The Town That Haunted Hemingway,” will be at Local Flavor Bookstore, reading from his new book “Side Door to Heaven for Hemingway.” After the reading, he will answer questions and sign books. Call Local Flavor at 231.582.7499 to reserve your place for this event.

12 and 1:30 p.m. – Fat Bike the North races on the groomed trails at The Hill Nature Preserve on West Clute Road. Beginner Class race at noon, Sport and Expert Classes race from 1:30 to 3:30. After Party at Boyne City Lanes starts at 4:30 p.m. Save $5 if you register by Jan. 22. Facebook page.

12 to 2 p.m. – HORSE-DRAWN SLEIGH RIDES starting from Old City Park, no charge.

1 to 3 p.m. – KIDS’ GAMES at Old City park, including Frozen Fish Toss, Frozen Turkey Bowling. Complimentary hot chocolate and doughnuts from Glen’s Market. Old City Park, corner of Park and River Streets.

1 p.m. X-C SKI LESSONS – Boyne Mountain Cross-Country Ski Center gives free half-hour lessons at 1 p.m. and free snowshoeing on their trails from 1 to 3 p.m. Ski rentals are available; bring your own snowshoes.

1 to 3:30 p.m. TEA AND TAROT at balanced living in the Huntington Bank Building. Workshop provides you with the opportunity to, in a safe, fun space, explore a different way of perception. With tea a bubbling, let’s open a dialog about the nature and importance of symbolism in one’s life. Mini-tarot readings will be available with an opportunity to schedule a full tarot reading if you desire. In addition, we may even have a professional sitar player to provide additional entertainment to our experience. $20 in advance or $25 at the door.

3 p.m. – CHILI COOK-OFF – Open to restaurants and anyone with access to a state-licensed kitchen. Call Libbie at 231-582-6554 to register, then bring one gallon of chili in a crock pot to Coldwell Banker Schmidt Realtors, 231 Water St. Tasting starts at 3 p.m. Entries so far include Red Mesa, Cafe Sante, BC Lanes, Frog Hollow, Parkside Grill, Barrel Back, Porter Creek Fish House, Boyne USA and Grain Train. Due to limited space, the cook-off is limited to the first 13 entries. Prizes awarded for Judges Choice and People’s Choice. Winner gets a traveling trophy, pictured at right.

3 p.m. – CROSS-COUNTRY SKI TOUR led by Jack Laurent at Young State Park. Easy, flat trails through beautiful forest. No charge, sign up by emailing jim@boynechamber.com.

4 to 7 p.m. – WINE TASTING – Stop by the Wine Emporium, 123 Water Street, for a complimentary taste of three seasonal offerings, conversation and snacks.

5 p.m. – SNOW SCULPTURE CONTEST winners announced in Sunset Park. Rules and information.

5 to 6 p.m. – STAR GAZING with Bryan Shumaker of the Northern Michigan Astronomy Club (cloud cover permitting), in Sunset Park.

8 p.m. – LIVE MUSIC from “Under the Moon” at Cafe Sante, One Water Street.

Boyne Highlands – 2016 USASA Revolution Tour Qualifier – January 30 – 31, 2016

The USASA in partnership with the USSA will award Revolution Tour Invitations to eligible USASA members participating in select regularly scheduled Regional Halfpipe & Slopestyle events. All USASA ages classes will be able to compete in all other Regional Series Slopestyle and Halfpipe Revolution Tour Qualifiers and will be awarded both Regional and Nationals points.

Snowboarders in the age classes listed below, in addition to earning USASA National and Regional points will be awarded invitations for the remaining stops in the 2016 Rev-Tour season and as a pre-qualified competitor for the 2017 Rev-Tour season.

  • Top two (2) in Snowboard Open Class (per gender / per discipline)
  • Top one (1) in Youth Snowboard(per gender / per discipline)

The Adgate Trophy race is hosted by Boyne’s Ambassador of skiing, former Olympian, US National Champion, and 2009 US Ski Hall of Fame inductee Cary Adgate.

The Adgate Trophy has historically attracted top talent from around the state and beyond. The course will be set on North Boyne.

There will be divisions for men and women as well as age categories. The winners in the open divisions for men and women will have their names etched on the Adgate Trophy.

Named after the founder of Boyne, Everett Kircher, this slalom race will take place on the hill that started it all in Northern Michigan, Hemlock.

Still regarded as the premier race hill in Northern Michigan, Hemlock always provides plenty of challenge for top racers from all over the state and beyond.

There will be divisions for men and women as well as age categories. The winners in the open divisions for men and women will have their names etched on the Kircher Cup.
