Smoke On The Water was a “pipe dream” for co-owner Julie Mann. Her husband and co-owner, Ed Mann is a self-employed plumber, has joined Julie in her dream to open a restaurant. Ed is from Charlevoix and Julie is from St. Paul, MN. Julie fell in love with Charlevoix the first time she visited with Ed in 2001. They both knew they wanted to retire in Charlevoix.
In 2010 Julie got a job with Ameriprise Financial in Minneapolis and they allowed her to work distant remote. In other words, she could work from home in Charlevoix! Ed arrived in September of 2011 with all of their things and critters and set up house. Julie arrived on December 31, 2011. Exactly two years later on December 31, 2013, they signed the papers to purchase the restaurant. They opened for business on Memorial Weekend, May 23, 2014.
Julie started smoking food on her Webber grill. Later they bought a small smoker and honed their skills. They knew if they were going to really go for their dream, they needed a large smoker. They found one in Athens, GA and made the trip down to pick it up. What a trip that was! Ed found an alternative route home and they ended up smoking the Dragon’s Tail.
They are very proud of the food they serve as almost everything is made from scratch. Great food, consistently prepared brought to you by good and friendly servers is their standard.

The Parsons family has been quietly farming and making maple syrup on the shores of Harwood Lake, a few miles south of downtown Charlevoix, since 1898. After five generations, we are very proud to announce the opening of the Harwood Gold Cafe. We opened August 2016, and we want to thank you – our friends, family and customers – for your incredible support of our local, family and women-owned business.
Our cafe is half cafe, half store. Representing our dedication to supporting local farmers and businesses, the cafe features a farm-fresh, seasonal menu, as well as espresso drinks, fresh juices and smoothies, plus our hand pies both hot and frozen. Our menu includes several vegetarian, vegan, and gluten-free options. The store side features all of the Harwood Gold products, with a tasting bar so you can try before you buy. A Short’s Beer Liberator will be on-site to guide you through the five-course dinner, explaining how each beer compliments the dish.
